A README for agents: a predictable place for the context and instructions a coding agent needs, kept separate from README.md because that one is for humans. No schema — it is plain markdown. Nested files are supported, with the closest file to the edited file winning and explicit user instructions overriding everything. Reported across 60,000-plus projects and now stewarded under the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation, it is the closest thing agentic coding has to a genuinely vendor-neutral convention.
